Eid-al-Adha: BASEPA Warns Against Using Tyres to Skin Off Animals

BASEPA Warns Against Using Tyres to Skin Animals in this Eid-al-Adha
As Eid al-Adha draws near, the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has raised the alarm over a harmful tradition that refuses to go away: using tyres to roast sacrificial animals.
In a press chat with journalists, BASEPA’s Director General, Dr. Mahmud Muhammad Bose, made it clear: burning tyres is dangerous and banned.
“It’s not just about the meat,” he explained. “The fumes from burning tyres contain toxic substances, heavy metals, carcinogens, that affect people nearby and pollute the air, soil, and water.”
Despite previous awareness campaigns, Dr. Bose noted that some communities still rely on this method during Sallah celebrations.
But this year, BASEPA isn’t taking chances.
Tighter Monitoring and Sanctions Coming
Environmental health officers will be stationed at abattoirs, markets, and major slaughter sites to monitor activities.
Those caught violating the tyre ban will face penalties, he warned.
BASEPA is also working closely with religious leaders, local chiefs, and butchers’ groups to promote safer, cleaner methods, like using firewood or gas.
“We understand it’s a cultural habit for some, but safety must come first. Eid should be a time of joy, not hidden health risks,” Dr Bose said.
He urged residents to report any tyre-burning incidents during the festival to the nearest BASEPA office.
A Call to Protect Health and Environment
The message is clear: this Eid, celebrate responsibly. Let’s avoid turning a moment of sacrifice into a source of long-term harm.
