Bauchi Groups Raise Concerns Over Federal Actions and Democratic Governance
Three civil society and political advocacy groups in Bauchi State have accused the Federal Government of actions they say could undermine democracy and good governance, following the arrest and prosecution of the State Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Yakubu Adamu, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The allegations were made on Monday at a press conference in Bauchi, organised by the Yakubun Bauchi Ambassador’s Forum, Kaura Independent Communication and Yakubu Adamu Influencers.
A joint statement was read by Daure David.

The groups described the EFCC’s handling of the case as an abuse of legal process, alleging that the arrest and prosecution of Mr Adamu, alongside some senior civil servants, were politically motivated and aimed at destabilizing the administration of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.
They maintained that Mr. Adamu committed no wrongdoing, arguing that all financial decisions taken by the Ministry of Finance were carried out in line with constitutional provisions, approved government procedures, and existing financial regulations.
Particular concern was raised over what the groups described as the repeated mention of Governor Mohammed’s name in the charge sheet.
They said this contravenes Section 308 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which grants immunity from prosecution to a sitting governor.
The groups also rejected allegations of terrorism financing and money laundering linked to the case, describing them as unsubstantiated.
They said no terrorist organisation or related activity had been identified, and that no credible evidence had been presented publicly to support the claims.
While reiterating their support for anti-corruption efforts, the groups cautioned that the EFCC must act strictly within the law and avoid any perception of political interference.
They warned that selective application of justice could weaken democratic institutions and erode public confidence in the fight against corruption.
The speakers expressed confidence in Governor Mohammed’s leadership, citing relative peace and progress in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure as indicators of good governance in the state.
Also speaking at the event, Jamila Aliyu, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said that despite her political differences with the organizers, she agreed with their position.
She accused the federal government of selective judgment and political bias.
In a closing remark, Abdullahi Shitu of the Yakubu Adamu Influencers stated that the press conference was intended to amplify what he described as the “voice of truth” in Bauchi State, adding that residents remain committed to democratic principles regardless of their political affiliation.
The groups called on the Attorney-General of the Federation to review the case and urged the EFCC to remove the governor’s name from all charge sheets.
They warned that continued actions against the Bauchi State Government could pose a threat to democracy and constitutional order.
Daure David jointly signed the statement for the Yakubun Bauchi Ambassador’s Forum, Abdul Rahman Prince Doze for Kaura Independent Communication, and Abdullahi Shitu for Yakubu Adamu Influencers.
