Inside Bauchi’s Safe School Initiative | A Structured Approach to Education Security
On Thursday, May 2, 2025, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, formally launched the Safe School Initiative in Bauchi State, aimed at strengthening the security of educational institutions across the region.
During the launch of the Safe Schools Stakeholders Forum and the inauguration of the Bauchi State Police Command’s School Protection Squad.
IGP Kayode Egbetokun, represented by AIG Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu of Zone 12 Headquarters, highlighted the deployment of new security enhancements.
These include CCTV installations, alarm systems, and enhanced patrol strategies already operational in several schools.
“Our gathering here today is a reminder of our duty to ensure schools remain secure and conducive for learning,” the IGP stated.
The event aligned with the broader National Plan on Financing Safe Schools, which has been in implementation since early 2024.
Commissioners of Police across states have been instructed to initiate similar programs to support national objectives.
Trained Squad Deployment and Preparedness Measures
Commissioner of Police for Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, disclosed that 90 officers had undergone specialized training between late March and April 2025.
These officers, designated as the Safe School Squad, have been equipped with surveillance tools, communication gear, and transportation resources to support operational duties.
Aliyu added that schools and communities are being engaged through awareness campaigns and training programs for teachers, administrators, and support staff.
These efforts are aimed at building collective emergency preparedness and response capacity.
“This initiative requires broad collaboration involving the police, schools, families, and the surrounding communities,” he said.
National Perspective and State-Level Involvement
Hajiya Halima Iliya, National Coordinator on Financing Safe Schools, reiterated the importance of community engagement and sustainable partnerships in achieving the program’s goals.
She encouraged all remaining states to adopt the initiative by Q3 2025 to align with national benchmarks, including improvements in Nigeria’s Human Capital Index by 2030.
