Former Bauchi Governor Alleges $150,000 Bribe Against Tinubu Minister

A fresh dispute has emerged within the Bauchi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following allegations made by former governor Isa Yuguda against Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar.

The disagreement became public on Wednesday after associates of the former governor reacted to a petition reportedly submitted against him at the party’s national secretariat. His supporters described the move as politically motivated, alleging it was aimed at weakening his standing within the party.

Claims and Counter-Claims

In a statement, Yuguda’s media team accused the minister of attempting to influence internal party structures in Bauchi State. They alleged that efforts were being made to challenge the outcome of a recent state congress.

Central to the claims is an allegation of financial inducement. The former governor’s camp said a sum of $150,000 was allegedly used to influence members of a delegation from the party’s national headquarters, with the intention of altering what they described as an agreed grassroots position.

The BBC has not independently verified these claims.

Concerns Over Party Unity

In a statement signed by his media aide, Yuguda described the situation as concerning, warning that such developments could affect party cohesion in the North-East.

He also questioned the involvement of a serving minister in state-level party matters, suggesting that national responsibilities should take priority.

The statement further referenced the political relationship between the two men, noting that Yuguda had previously supported Tuggar’s early political career, including his election to the House of Representatives in 2007.

Call for Restraint

Despite the growing tension, Yuguda said he would avoid escalating the dispute, adding that his focus remains on strengthening the APC in Bauchi State and supporting the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He also highlighted his role within party support structures in the North-East, emphasising his commitment to party unity and electoral preparation.

Awaiting Response

As of the time of filing this report, Yusuf Tuggar had not publicly responded to the allegations.

Political observers say how the party leadership handles the situation may be crucial in determining the APC’s internal stability in Bauchi State ahead of future elections.
